A message from the Chancellor
Every university begins with a belief about what education should do for people. Ours is simple: a student's postal code should never decide the quality of the degree available to them.
On behalf of the Board of Management, faculty and staff of MIT University Sikkim, I welcome students, parents and well-wishers to our University. MIT University Sikkim was established by the Government of Sikkim under Sikkim Act No. 11 of 2024, and operates from our campus at Namchi. It exists to answer a question the Northeast has asked for decades: why should talented young people have to leave home to receive a world-class education?
Our Vision for Higher Education
I see higher education as infrastructure, not a privilege reserved for a few. A well-run university changes the economic future of a family within a single generation. Our vision is to make that kind of change available inside Sikkim, so that ambition no longer requires a plane ticket to Delhi, Bengaluru or Kolkata. We are building programmes, faculty strength and campus facilities with that single outcome in mind.
The Mission That Guides Us
Our mission is to combine UGC-recognised academic rigour with an environment that genuinely supports students — in the classroom, in placement preparation and in personal growth. We measure ourselves not by the number of programmes we announce, but by how well our graduates are prepared for the working world and for further study, in India or abroad.
Student Development and Academic Excellence
A university's real product is the confidence and capability of its students. We are building academic structures — regular assessment, mentorship, industry exposure and a genuine focus on learning outcomes — that hold both students and faculty to a high standard. Excellence, for us, means a student who can think independently, communicate clearly and apply what they have learned.
Innovation, Research and Entrepreneurship
Sikkim's location, biodiversity and culture offer research questions that few other campuses can access. We are encouraging faculty and students to pursue applied research connected to the Himalayan region, and building support structures for students who want to start ventures rather than only seek employment. Curiosity and enterprise are qualities we intend to nurture deliberately, not leave to chance.
Ethical Leadership and Responsible Citizenship
A degree without character is an incomplete education. We expect every student who graduates from MIT University Sikkim to carry a sense of integrity into their profession and their community — honest in their work, fair in their dealings and mindful of their responsibility to the society that supported their education.
Engaging with Industry and Society
Classrooms alone cannot prepare students for the workplace. We are building partnerships with employers and industry bodies so that internships, guest teaching and live projects become a normal part of academic life, not an occasional add-on. A university also owes something back to the region it sits in, and we intend our campus to be an active contributor to Sikkim's civic and economic life.
Inclusive and Accessible Education
We have reserved 25% of seats for Sikkim-domicile students and set aside a share of non-teaching positions for local residents, because inclusion has to be built into policy, not left as a stated intention. Merit-based and need-based scholarship support is designed to make sure that a genuinely capable student is never turned away for reasons of finance.
Future-Ready Learning
The working world our students will enter in five years will look different from the one we see today. Our academic planning is aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, which allows for flexible, multidisciplinary study rather than rigid, single-track degrees. We would rather prepare students to keep learning than hand them a fixed set of skills that may not last a career.
To our students: this campus was built for you — use it fully, ask questions without hesitation, and hold yourself to the standard we are setting together. To our faculty and staff: thank you for the daily work of building something new. To parents and stakeholders: your trust is the responsibility we carry most seriously, and we intend to honour it.
