Code of Conduct

Every student of MIT University Sikkim is expected to maintain the highest standards of discipline, honesty and mutual respect, on campus and at every activity connected with the University. This Code applies in classrooms, laboratories, the library, hostels, University transport, University events, off-campus activities connected with the University, and on digital platforms.

1. General Conduct

• Treat every member of the University community with courtesy and respect, without regard to caste, religion, region, gender, language or economic background.
• Carry the University identity card at all times on campus and produce it on request.
• Observe the notified timings of classes, laboratories, the library and the hostel.
• Use University property, equipment and digital resources responsibly; damage is recoverable from the student concerned.
• Comply with the instructions of faculty, the administration and authorised staff.

2. Attendance

• A minimum of 75% attendance is required in each course to be eligible to appear in the end-semester examination.
• Attendance shortfall is condoned only on medical or exceptional grounds, with documentary proof and the approval of the competent authority.
• Attendance records are published periodically; a student who believes a record is incorrect must raise it within the notified window.

3. Academic Integrity

• Examination malpractice of any kind — copying, unauthorised material, impersonation, use of an electronic device — is a serious offence.
• Plagiarism in assignments, projects, dissertations and theses is dealt with under the applicable UGC norms on academic integrity.
• Fabrication of data, forgery of a University document, or submission of a false certificate results in cancellation of admission and referral to the police where warranted.

4. Prohibited Conduct

• Ragging in any form; the University maintains zero tolerance and follows the UGC Regulations, 2009
• Any act of sexual harassment; complaints are dealt with by the Internal Complaints Committee
• Possession or use of alcohol, tobacco, narcotics or any intoxicant on campus
• Possession of weapons, explosives or hazardous material
• Violence, intimidation, extortion or wilful damage to property
• Unauthorised political, commercial or religious activity on campus
• Discrimination or hate speech, including online
• Circulating photographs, recordings or messages of members of the University community without consent
• Unauthorised entry to restricted areas, and unauthorised gatherings

5. Disciplinary Process

1. 1A written complaint or report is submitted to the Office of the Registrar / Dean of Student Welfare.
2. 2The competent authority conducts a preliminary examination and, where warranted, refers the matter to the Disciplinary Committee.
3. 3The student is issued a written notice stating the allegation and is given an opportunity to be heard.
4. 4The Committee records its findings and recommends action proportionate to the offence.
5. 5The decision is communicated in writing, with reasons.

6. Penalties

• Written warning or censure
• Fine, or recovery of the cost of damage
• Withholding of results, scholarship or other benefits
• Debarment from an examination or from representing the University
• Suspension or expulsion from the hostel
• Rustication for one or more semesters
• Expulsion from the University, and referral to the police where the conduct is an offence in law

7. Appeal

A student aggrieved by a disciplinary decision may appeal in writing to the Vice Chancellor within 15 days of receiving the decision. A student may also approach the Students' Grievance Redressal Committee and the Ombudsperson.
