Course Guide

BBA in Retail — Complete Course Information

1BBA in Retail at MIT University Sikkim

BBA in Retail is a 3-year, 120-credit undergraduate programme taught in regular, full-time mode on the MIT University Sikkim campus at Namchi. The programme runs across 6 semesters and is placed at Level 6 of the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework, so the degree you earn is comparable with programmes offered by universities across India.

For most students the 3-year, 120-credit degree is the best option. It gives you a complete, UGC-recognised BBA degree in three years, keeps your total tuition lower, and lets you start work or a two-year postgraduate programme a full year earlier than a four-year route. Students who later want a research career can continue for one more year and finish with the optional 4-Year, 160-credit Honours degree — that decision is made at the end of Year 3, not on the day you apply.

MIT University Sikkim is a state private university established by the Government of Sikkim under Sikkim Act No. 11 of 2024, recognised by the UGC and holding membership of the Association of Indian Universities. BBA in Retail is taught under the National Education Policy 2020 and the Choice Based Credit System, which means the syllabus, credits and assessment follow current national norms.

2How the NEP 2020 structure works

Under NEP 2020 your degree is not a single fixed list of subjects. Each semester you choose major (1) + minor (1) + mdc (1) + sec (1) + vac (1), and every one of those choices carries credits that add up to the 120 credits required for the award of BBA Degree — 120 Credits.

Your Major is Retail. It is the discipline your degree is named after and it accounts for the largest share of your credits — 60 credits of specialised theory, practical work and projects across the programme.

The Minor is a second subject you study alongside the Major, usually worth 24 credits. In this programme the Minor basket is drawn from Computing & Information Technology, and you can choose options such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science and Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning. A well-chosen Minor widens the jobs you can apply for without diluting your core subject.

Multidisciplinary Courses, written as MDC, are taken outside your own faculty so that every graduate leaves with some grounding beyond their specialisation. Typical MDC choices include Introduction to the Indian Constitution, Basics of Economics, Environmental Studies and Fundamentals of Computers & AI.

Skill Enhancement Courses, or SEC, are the practical, employability-focused part of the structure — options here include Tally & Computerised Accounting, GST & E-Filing, Digital Marketing and Advanced Excel. Value Added Courses, or VAC, cover the wider responsibilities of a graduate and include areas such as Constitutional Values & Fundamental Duties, Environmental Science & Sustainability, Health and Wellness & Yoga.

Ability Enhancement Courses in language and communication run through the early semesters, and internships, field work or a capstone project complete the credit requirement in the final year.

3Eligibility and who should apply

The minimum qualification for BBA in Retail is 12th in Any Stream. Admission is merit based, there is no upper age limit, and there is no separate entrance examination — your marks in the qualifying examination and the documents you submit decide your place.

The programme suits students who want a clear career direction in commerce, management & finance, working candidates who want a recognised degree to move up in their field, and anyone planning higher studies or competitive examinations after graduation. Lateral entry into a later year may be available to eligible diploma holders as per university norms.

If you are unsure whether your qualification fits, the admissions team reviews your marksheets before you pay anything and tells you honestly which programme and which year of entry apply to you.

4Credits, exit options and the Academic Bank of Credits

Every course you pass adds credits to your record, and those credits are deposited in the Academic Bank of Credits maintained under UGC rules. Because the credits are stored nationally, they stay with you even if you pause your studies or move to another recognised university.

That is what makes the multiple exit system practical. In this programme the recognised exit awards are UG Certificate (40 Credits); UG Diploma (80 Credits); BBA Degree (120 Credits). A student who has to stop after one or two years leaves with a formal qualification rather than nothing, and can return later to complete the remaining credits.

The award at the end of the three years is BBA Degree — 120 Credits. Students who want research training can add a fourth year and graduate with the 160-credit Honours or Honours with Research degree, which opens the one-year postgraduate route and direct PhD entry as per UGC norms. Both routes lead to a valid, UGC-recognised degree — the three-year, 120-credit path is simply the faster and more economical one, and remains our recommendation for most students.

5Curriculum and what you will learn

The first year builds the foundation of Retail together with language, digital and multidisciplinary courses, so that students from different school backgrounds reach a common level before specialisation begins.

The middle semesters move into core theory and applied work in areas such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning and Cyber Security. Teaching mixes lectures with tutorials, laboratory or studio practice, case discussion, seminars and field exposure, and each semester includes continuous internal assessment alongside the end-semester examination.

The final year concentrates on advanced coursework, an internship or on-the-job training, and a capstone project that you present and defend. By the time you graduate you should be able to work independently in retail, analyse problems methodically, communicate your findings clearly, and use the standard tools and methods your field expects. Soft-skill, resume and interview training are built into the final semesters.

6Career opportunities and higher studies

Graduates of BBA in Retail typically begin in roles such as Business Analyst, Operations Executive, Finance Associate, Marketing Manager and Entrepreneur. Recruitment happens in both the private sector and government organisations; government eligibility always depends on the notification issued by the recruiting authority, but a UGC-recognised degree from a state university satisfies the basic educational requirement.

The programme also builds skills that transfer well between employers — Critical thinking, Communication, Analytical reasoning and Retail domain expertise — which matters as much as the subject knowledge itself when you apply for your first job.

For higher studies, the 120-credit degree qualifies you for a two-year postgraduate programme in Retail or an allied discipline, and for competitive examinations that require a bachelor's degree. If you complete the optional fourth year and earn the 160-credit Honours degree, you additionally become eligible for one-year postgraduate programmes and for direct PhD admission where the UGC and the admitting university allow it.

7Admission process for 2026

Admission is fully online and straightforward. You register on the official application portal, fill in your personal and academic details, upload your documents and pay the registration fee of ₹10,000. Applications for the 2026 session are open now.

The admissions team then verifies your documents and confirms your eligibility, usually within a couple of working days. Once your seat is confirmed you complete the fee formalities, receive your enrolment number and joining instructions, and are added to the academic calendar for your batch.

Counselling is free and there is no obligation at the enquiry stage. If you would rather talk before applying, call +91 6009466009, message the team on WhatsApp, or submit the enquiry form on this page and a counsellor will call you back.

8Fees, scholarships and documents

Fees vary by programme and year of entry, so the current fee structure is shared by the admissions team rather than quoted here; the official fee document is also available on the downloads page. The registration fee at the time of application is ₹10,000, and the balance is payable according to the schedule confirmed with you at admission.

Eligible students may receive a scholarship or fee benefit, and 25% of seats are reserved for eligible Sikkim-domicile students. Scholarship eligibility is confirmed by the admissions team after your application has been reviewed — no percentage is promised in advance.

Keep the usual documents ready in scanned form: your Class 10 and Class 12 marksheets and certificates, a transfer or migration certificate where applicable, a government photo identity document such as Aadhaar, a recent passport-size photograph, your signature, and a category or domicile certificate if you are claiming a reserved seat or a scholarship.
